The Community House Middle School band opened in the 2005 school year under the direction of Barry Garrison and Elizabeth Dockery. Since then the band program has experienced tremendous growth and success aiming to provide students with tools for life through performance of quality music. Most recently David Shives joined the CHMS band program in 2013. The CHMS bands enjoy performing several concerts within the community throughout the year and consistently receive superior ratings at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Music Performance Adjudication and other regional competitions.
In 2017 the CHMS 8th grade band participated in the Musical Showcase presented by Charlotte Concerts. The Musical Showcase featured performances from 14 of the top performing ensembles in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The CHMS 8th grade band received the Award of Excellence designating the 8th grade band as the best middle school performing arts program in Charlotte.
Director of Bands
David Shives is in his 8th year of teaching and 5th year at Community House Middle School. He conducts the 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, as well as oversees the competitive winter guard, and indoor concert percussion groups. Under his direction the bands at CHMS have earned consistent superior ratings at state and regional contest.
Mr. Shives studied Euphonium with Mr. Robert Clark at Appalachian State Univeristy where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance: Euphonium. Mr. Shives received his Masters of Music in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Mr. Shives enjoys spending his time at home in Fort Mill with his wife Kati and their dog Daisy.
